Storing excess electricity as high-temperature heat
CHEMICAL ENGINEERING 1 Jan 2021
Late last November, the energy-transition start-up company Lumenion GmbH (Berlin, Germany; www.lumenion.com) received the 2020 Berlin Brandenburg Innovation Prize for its high-temperature, steel-based energy-storage technology. …
Startup Lumenion presents pilot for power storage with steel plates
PV Magazine 28 FEB 2020
Berlin-based energy startup Lumenion has presented the pilot of its 2.4-megawatt-hour (MWh) steel storage system in a housing project in Germany’s capital. The technology would allow the company to store excess renewable electricity – produced in especially windy and sunny periods – as heat (up to 650°C) in steel plates.

Flexible sector coupling: To date, the energy transition has unfolded primarily in the electricity sector. This limitation should be overcome by sector coupling, which is basically electrification of the mobility and heat sectors. But this alone does not offer a complete solution. Sector coupling must be flexible. To this end, a Berlin-based startup is developing a colossal steel storage tank, and battery storage facilities are being built in Canada along a highway.
